Oreo is a black and white cat who wandered into St. Augustine Health Ministries in Cleveland, Ohio in 2017. Over the years she has proven to be the best volunteer St. Augustine’s has had. Both residents and employees love her. She is especially comforting to those who had pets and had to give them up.
St. Augustine’s cares for more than 200 residents. Oreo aides in providing those residents with love and attention. “Oreo is not a ‘lap cat’ but likes to be close,” Dana Carns, director of advancement at the facility said. “She loves to have her head scratched. Residents, staff and the children from our early learning center, look for Oreo. She is most often the greeter.”
Oreo stays on the main floor of the nursing home and does not go upstairs to the private rooms. Even though residents are allowed to bring their pets with them, it often does not work out because of the busy, noisy environment. Oreo offers companionship to those pet lovers.
