Pikachu the Cat’s Ashes to Orbit Earth in Fitting Memorial

Pikachu Memorial in Space

After Pikachu an orange tabby passed away from feline diabetes, his owner vowed to memorialize him in the best way possible by sending his ashes into space. So Pikachu the cat’s ashes will orbit earth in a most fitting memorial.

Steve Munt from Oregon says that Pikachu was a typical cat in that he was always on adventures. And what better way to immortalize Pikachu than by sending him on the ultimate last adventure into space.  Munt added that “Pikachu was an explorer and found us through his neighborhood explorations.”  Pikachu was adopted by Munt’s family even though the errant cat already had another home in the neighborhood. Munt learned this when Pikachu’s original owners called and asked why their cat had a new collar. Eventually, Pikachu chose Munt and his family as his own, and his old owners gracefully accepted the cat’s choice.

Munt decided on a space memorial because he has always been interested in space. “Pikachu will have a final send-off like no cat has ever had before,” Munt, wrote on his GoFundMe page.

Sending a cat into space has all been made possible by a company called Celestis which also offers memorial spaceflights for humans. Celestis describes its service as placing the pet’s ashes in earth orbit where they remain until reentry into the atmosphere when they harmlessly vaporize like a shooting star in final tribute.

Pikachu will be the first cat to be launched into space by Celestis, which has already sent two dogs. “I wanted Pikachu to be the first, continue his legacy as an explorer and show the world that a cat is just as worthy as a dog of a special tribute,” Munt said.

Celestis offers four different options. The most affordable ($2,495.00) is the “Earth Rise” service where after being launched into space, the pet’s remains are retrieved in a capsule and returned to the pet’s owner.  The “Earth Orbit”, which Munt has opted for, costs $4,995.00. Grieving owners can even send their beloved pets to the moon with the “Luna” option. With the “Voyager” option pets can even be sent on an infinite trip through deep space for $10,000.
