ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Alfred Arthur Brunel de Neuville (1852 – 1941, French) by his twenties had become famous as an animal artist and remained quite popular throughout his lifetime.  Following in the footsteps of Henriette Ronner-Knip and other 19th century cat artists, his paintings exude a sentimental realist style.  Typical paintings of cats and kittens are set against a dark background with the animals most often portrayed playing with balls of yarn, bugs, birds or just up to general mischief.

De Neuville was highly popular during his lifetime, but since his death popularity has waxed and waned.  In terms of value, his work fetches more in North America than in Europe. European auction prices are between €2,500 and €5,000, but in the USA prices can go over $10,000.

De Neuville died in 1941 and is buried in Montmartre Cemetery in Paris. His works can be seen in museums at Béziers, Brest, Chateau Thierry, and Louviers.
