Bruno Andreas Liljefors (1860-1939, Swedish) was one of the most influential wildlife artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Liljefors was a hunter and captured his own cats hunting as well. However, he also painted his cat Jeppe sleeping or just sunning himself. His works lack the typical 19th century sentimentality and are devoid of emotion. However, his paintings are beautifully executed using pleasing colors; the influence of Impressionism is clearly evident. Liljefors concentrated on the patterns found in nature often drawing attention to the camouflage of animals, focusing on their relationship with nature. In order to study and capture his animal subjects in a semi natural environment, he collected quite a few and kept them as pets.
