The Chauvet Caves were discovered on December 18, 1994, and they are one of the most significant prehistoric findings to date. Radiocarbon dates show two periods of habitation, one 37,000 to 33,500 years ago and the second from 31,000 to 28,000 years ago with most of the black drawings dating to the earlier period. Out of hundreds of wall paintings, at least 13 different species of animals have been recorded. Unlike other cave paintings, the Chauvet paintings include predatory animals such as lions, panthers and bear. What is also different is that the artists who painted these animals used techniques rarely found in other cave art. Many of the paintings were done after the walls had been scraped clear and made smooth. In addition, the paintings capture animals interacting with one another with a three-dimensional quality. The cave has been sealed off to the public since 1994.
